The Indian health insurance sector is experiencing a transformative phase in 2026, with premium growth accelerating and regulatory changes reshaping the market dynamics. As per IRDAI's 134th meeting review, the health insurance segment recorded a growth rate of 14.41% up to January 2026, with standalone health insurers outperforming at 17.89% growth and premium collections reaching Rs 35,815 crore.
GST Exemption: A Game-Changer
The single most impactful policy change has been the GST exemption on health insurance policies, effective September 22, 2025. The removal of the 18% GST on retail health insurance policies has significantly reduced premium costs, making coverage more affordable for millions of Indian households.
According to ICRA's analysis, health insurance is expected to remain the primary growth driver for the non-life sector in FY2027, with industry GDPI projected to grow by 9.7-10.6%.
Senior Citizen Coverage Expansion
In September 2024, the government expanded health coverage to all senior citizens aged 70 years and above, irrespective of income. As of February 2026, a total of 43.52 crore Ayushman cards have been created under the programme.
