Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) closed FY26 with a stellar performance, reporting a consolidated net profit of Rs 23,467 crore in Q4 — up 23% YoY — and a record full-year PAT of Rs 57,419 crore, up 19% from FY25. The results were accompanied by a Rs 10 per share final dividend and a maiden 1:1 bonus issue.
The VNB Story: Growth vs Margin
The headline VNB growth of 42% to Rs 14,179 crore for FY26 is impressive. However, a closer look reveals nuance: while Q4 VNB surged 66.7% to Rs 5,891 crore with margins expanding to 25.66% (from 18.75%), the full-year VNB margin of 21.2% — though up 360 bps from 17.6% — still trails private sector peers like SBI Life (27.5%) and HDFC Life.
Management attributed the margin improvement to a favourable product mix shift, with non-par products now accounting for over 35% of individual APE. The channel diversification strategy has also delivered, with banca and alternate channels recording growth of over 45% and premium collections crossing Rs 5,000 crore during FY26.
Key Metrics
LIC's Q4 APE rose 22% to Rs 22,954 crore, while net premium income grew 12% to Rs 1.65 trillion. Net investment income rose 17% to Rs 1.09 trillion, reflecting strong returns on the insurer's massive AUM of Rs 57.3 lakh crore.
The solvency ratio improved to 2.35 from 2.11, comfortably above the regulatory requirement. However, the 13th-month persistency ratio weakened to 67.77% from 68.62%, signalling some pressure on policy retention — an area that warrants monitoring.
Outlook
With the recent 1:1 bonus issue and strong capital position, LIC is well-placed to navigate the transition to Ind AS 117 and the risk-based capital framework. The key challenge will be sustaining margin improvement while managing the expense ratio, which rose to 12.52% from 11.15%.
